The recertification program for Certified Direct Entry Midwives (CDEM) ensures that practicing midwives maintain their proficiencies, knowledge, and adherence to professional standards. This program promotes ongoing professional development and ensures that midwives work toward continuing to provide high-quality, competent care in out-of-hospital settings.

CDEM recertification takes place every four calendar years from the year of the original certification, with all recertification requirements and documentation submitted by the 30th day of June for members with credentials that are set to expire within the calendar year. Below are the detailed requirements for midwives seeking recertification.

Recertification Requirements:

  1. Continuing Education:

    • Complete at least 30 hours of continuing education units (CEUs) every three years. These CEUs should cover various topics relevant to midwifery practice, including updates in clinical practice, new research findings, and professional development.

  2. Clinical Practice:

    • Provide a redacted list demonstrating participation in at least 20 births over the past three (3) years (5 must meet COC requirements) using the Recertification Clinical Experience Log.

  3. Certifications:

    • Provide documentation of current certifications in CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) or HBB (Helping Babies Breathe). These certifications must be up-to-date and renewed as required by the certifying organizations.

  4. Peer Review:

    • Participate in a peer review process at least once annually. This involves presenting case studies and receiving feedback from fellow midwives to promote reflective practice and continuous improvement.

  5. Informed Disclosure of Midwifery Practice:

    • Provide any updated, informed disclosure of your midwifery practice, including changes in practice settings, services offered, and client population.

  6. Professional Involvement:

    • Demonstrate active involvement in the midwifery community, such as participating in professional organizations, attending conferences, or contributing to midwifery research and publications in a self-generated summary letter.

  1. Application Form:

    • Complete and submit the recertification application form along with the required documentation.

    • Upload the required documents into your NFDEM shared folder.

    • Receive notification of recertification status upon successful completion of all requirements.
